Title
Broccoli
Description
It's ridiculously good for you, vitamins, fiber, compounds that might prevent all sorts of ailments. But that's almost beside the point. Broccoli succeeded by being interesting: strange-looking, versatile, better than it needs to be. A flower that became food that became beloved. Humans engineered this ridiculous thing from wild mustard through sheer persistence, selecting for bigger flower heads until we got this tree-shaped marvel. The Romans loved it. Thomas Jefferson planted it. Broccoli is a cultivated variant of Brassica oleracea, selectively bred over centuries to produce enlarged flowering heads for human consumption. A member of the cruciferous family, it shares genetic lineage with cabbage, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts—all derived from the same wild mustard ancestor through targeted agricultural development. Kids everywhere regard it with suspicion.
